There haven't been any recent ootd shots for November, partly because I'd forgotten like a silly, and partly because my classes are atm so early that it eventually got difficult to put in time & dress nicely (the ones above are from weekends or when there was a school event).  And it's pretty cold now. |D  So all my cuter clothes are stashed till the spring.

~ Nov. 26 Tip : 1000mg Vitamin C per Day

I've been taking a 1000mg vitamin C capsule every day for about a month now, and it really does a number on clearing up your complexion.  I tend to get a lot of little pimples/bumps on my forehead, and after a week of VC they were half gone.  It also helps a lot with slowly fading dark spots/discoloration/acne scars. c:  It's actually okay and safe to take this amount - vitamin C is water-soluble, which means your body will be able to handle the excess and get rid of it with pee.  Make sure to drink plenty of water with it, both to help the VC go through your body and because water is generally good all over.

(Admin note: Hi, sorry I've been busy and not posted in over a month!  I have a full load of college classes so to keep the blog relatively updated, I'll try to do a daily/every other day tip at least.  There may also be posts about other non-beauty related things to mix it up. c:  P.S.  HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE.  I hope you had a wonderful holiday.  +Isa)

❦ 2012 Make-up Masterpost + extra tips

The make-up I use/have used pretty much every day, or at least pretty often, this past year. c:

Most of these I've been using for a very long time, a couple are pretty recent.  I tend to NOT use things like liquid foundation or any sort of foundation - my skin doesn't do so great with it and I prefer a natural (& more breatheable) appearance.  There's no eyeshadows here because I haven't used those since I was in a show, and I touch my eyes a lot so they usually come off. c:

USE: daily
RATE: 4 stars

I have had my jar of this since 2008.  I've been using it every day I go out since 2011, not to mention here and there between 2008-2011.  You need only a very very tiny bit, and it makes a beautiful smooth line or smudges wonderfully, whatever you like!  This stuff keeps extremely well and once applied lasts all day, I've only had to do a touch-up if I've scrubbed my eyes REALLY hard on accident.  I've gone swimming, both pool and beach, and it still didn't come off.  The formula is contact-lens safe as well.  $15.00 may seem like a lot for the little jar but trust me, it hasn't dried up or hardened or faded in the four years I've had it.
I bought MAC brush #210 with this, and I've used that brush with the gel liner since.

The only potential problem I see would be keeping bacteria from growing in the container, similar to mascaras and other double-dip type make-up ( trust me you WANT to keep things clean especially if they go anywhere near your eyes).  As long as you wash your brush very well before and after dipping in the jar, and keep the jar tightly closed, it should be perfectly fine.  The woman at the shop also recommended scooping a little gel out onto a plate and using that, rather than dipping directly into the jar.  I do both - keep the brush SUPER clean, and scoop gel out for use - hence I've been able to keep mine for 4 years.

USE: occasional, about 2X a month / special occasions
RATE: 3 stars

I've had my jar of this since 2010, and only use it when I have a photo taken, or for a special occasion or date or such - as I said above I don't really like having a coating feeling on my face.

That said, this is the lightest and least noticeable face powder I've ever used.  I do believe part of bareMinerals' pitch is that their makeup is -good- for your face, but I haven't noticed much nor used it often enough to see an improvement.

It looks extremely natural and makes your skin have a glowy porcelain-ish look (kind of like a dandelion, I don't know how to describe it elsewise |D) without hiding your natural skintone.  It's very very sheer, so it will not fully hide any imperfections or uneven skin tone, but it does a very good job enhancing the good parts of your complexion and blurring any problem parts.  Also it's great to use over a tinted powder, to set it.  It does come off a little easily if you touch your face, as it's a powder and doesn't stick as strongly as foundation.  I usually apply this about 20 minutes after I put on face lotion - your skin is moist enough to help hold the powder in place, but not too much that it clumps up.

+++

USE: a few times a week
RATE: 4 stars

I've been using this mascara since 2010.  I used to use Maybelline lashBlast, but BUXOM's made with more natural ingredients.  (I haven't looked at the recent lashBlast so I don't know if the formula's changed.)

The brush is plastic, and really good - it separates all your lashes out and has no clumps.  It goes on smoothly and easily, and it's easy to control how much mascara gets on the brush (I just scrape the brush on the edge of the tube to remove any extra formula).  I only use one coat, you don't really need two as it just gets thick looking and clumps with the more coats you apply.

The formula claims to thicken/lengthen eyelashes, and I -DID- notice they grew longer the more often I used it (not sure what's in it, maybe conditioner?) , as well as my eyelashes looking darker.  The only downside: it doesn't come in waterproof, so don't get in the pool with these.  Also this is one of the products that I've changed every year I've had it, as I've found it's harder to keep mascara tubes clean - better to be safe!

NOTE:  Personally I prefer non-waterproof mascaras, because I've noticed that waterproof mascara formulas are stickier and more prone to clumping, and look less natural.  Non-waterproof tends to go on more easily as well.  YMMV.

COTY AIRSPUN Face Powder in Suntan: Dark Peach
USE: occasionally; special occasions, shows
RATE: 4.5 stars

I've been using this since before I even got to highschool, up to today; never used any other kind of tinted powder in my life.  My mom and grandmother used this in the past as well - it's been around for a long time.

It's very fluffy and smooth, and extremely light; also one of the few powders I found an exact/almost exact skintone match.  It doesn't cake at all, and it's very easily applied and removed.  I've used this both as a very light powder, and as a thicker coat for stage makeup, and both looked great.  There's a light scent that borders between baby powder and granny perfume - I love it, it smells oldfashioned and like something from the 1920's.  The packaging's lovely too, it's changed a couple times since I started using it.  Inside there's a cellophane and cardboard "seal" that you can remove to use and then put back afterwards.  It's a little bit messy and difficult to open, but it's easy when you get used to it.

The box I have at the moment, I've had for about 2 years (I only got a new box because I dropped the previous one, and that was still half-full after 4 years of use :c).  You only need a little bit at a time, it lasts forever.  It blends in nicely and is nearly as good as foundation at covering up anything you want.  Plus it's almost as light as Mineral Veil, and comes in a LOT of shades (including translucent)...and they're between $4 to $8 for a box.

I've never tried another powder in any other brand that compared to this at all in either quality or price.  Magic in a box, I swear.  Don't knock the "cheap" stuff if you haven't tried it, a lot of the times it -can- be really amazing!
The con: this stuff is majorly hard to track down in stores.  It used to be really easy to find (I got mine at Wal-Mart for $6), but I can't find it anywhere except online anymore. :c  Perhaps it's just in my area.  I prefer not to get skintone things online because it's hard to return them if they look really off.

Maybelline BABYLIPS Lip Balm in Quenched (right)
USE: daily
RATE: 4 stars

I gave this a try when it came out because I've always had horribly chapped lips, which I then bit at, which made it worse and repeated the cycle.  It really does its job well - my lips are much smoother than they've ever been, nothing to nibble off anymore. c:  I *think* they're all SPF 20, which is great - I have Quenched, which has the SPF and something like a fruit-candy-bubblegum smell.  Quenched is clear, which is nice to wear under/over lipstick, but the balm comes in color tints too.

It has a healthy light "gloss" look, although being a balm, which also means it's a little oily; I found it tends to drip a bit on hot days, but it's not terrible.  One application lasts a pretty long while.  I like to put it really thick at night, my lips turn out very soft and plushy when I wake up.

I've had my current tube since around February/March, and it's only half used so not too bad for ~$4.  Hopefully I'll try the peppermint one (also untinted).  It's very easy to find at any drugstore or WalMart.

+++

USE: rarely, special occasions (~3-4X a month)
RATE: 3.5 stars

I've been using this since 2009.  It has a lovely sheer pink (no glitter) tint to your lips, and it really does "match" your best lip color.  I've noticed sometimes if it's very hot it turns out darker than usual, so maybe it changes depending on your body temperature.  It lasted a long time for me because I use this sparingly - it took me 2 years to get through one tube.  I use it as a lipcolor instead of lipstick, it's very prettily glossy and I don't have to worry that I applied too much because it retains the same color depth regardless of how much you apply (unlike lipstick).

My lips do get a little chapped after using this (my aunt has had the same thing happen, but a friend who uses it said it fixed her chapped lips so YMMV).  It's also a bit oily and may drip a little, easily fixed with clear lipliner.

~ extra tips ~

  • Here's the general rules for changing out make-up that I was told at both Sephora and MAC.
    • For "dry" make-up (loose/solid powders, blushes, eyeshadows), it's best to change it after 2 years.  Colored dry make-up like blush and eyeshadow tends to fade a little the longer you keep it.
    • For "wet" make-up (cream eyeshadow/blush, liquid foundations, etc.) best is to change it out after 1 year.
    • For make-up that comes in direct contact with your lips/eyes (lip balms, lipsticks, gloss, mascara, eyeliner sticks), it can last 6 months or less depending on how much you use it and how you use it.
    • ***My personal rule is to simply take very very good care of your make-up and tools.  Use it carefully and keep it and your tools as clean as you can manage - common sense things!  You can get the most out of your make-up that way.  Regardless, if the make-up is obviously "off" or in any sort of bad condition, by all means *stop* using it and change it out; your health is way more important. c:
  • Pay attention to how your make-up looks/feels/smells.  Mascara especially is prone to causing some nasty eye infections, so know what your stuff's SUPPOSED to look like!
  • If you want to thin out a make-up by adding water, do *NOT* add it straight into the original container.  The water may not necessarily be clean, and can give bacteria a chance to grow in a nice, damp, dark, safe container.  (Can't stress the mascara thing enough, plenty of girls in my theater group got pinkeye/eye irritation by adding water to revive dry mascara.)
  • When using gel liners, it really helps a lot with application if the brush is slightly damp.  The liner glides on much more smoothly and more defined looking, and it's much easier to create winged or cateye shapes.

♬ Hatoful Boyfriend Otome Game

It's an otome game best explained by this post.  Basically it's a dating sim game, where you're the only human attending a prestigious birds-only school.  Hato = Japanese for dove, and all your potential love interests are pigeons.  Interesting concept, no?  c:  The explanation link also has links to the demo and english patch for the game (thank thank Ava, if I didn't see this on your page I wouldn'tve been weirded out enough to try it~).  From what I read, even though the pigeon thing is a little out there, the plot itself is pretty good - worth a shot!
The link above is for the demo free version - the full version has more storylines/endings, and more characters.  It's $5~ (which I am too poor for, sobsob), but if the free version appeals to you then that's a pretty good price to get the total package!

To install the english patch:
  1. go here
  2. download the demo from the JP site (1st link)
  3. download the english patch from the 2nd link
  4. unzip both folders
  5. replace the read.me and src.fwd in the JP game, with the read.me and src.fwd from the PATCH
  6. make sure you have Quicktime 7
  7. make sure your System Locale is set to JAPAN/JAPANESE
    1. WINDOWS: Start Menu > Control Panel > Clock, Language, and Region > Region and Language > go to Administrative tab > Change System Locale > select Japanese (Japan) > restart to apply changes
  8. Run the game!  Good luck~

I didn't do one per day as I'd wanted :c but maybe that's for the better because 30 photos is a lot, and these are pretty much the only particularly interesting OOTDs.  Next month I may do one every day and then just pick out the best 5 or 10 of them.

quick note!

Just a note for anyone looking for the Umineko and K-On! Movie links I posted before - I had to take them down due to copyright issues... apologies if you came here looking for those~! :ccccc

If it's any consolation, they're VERY easily found on Google/Piratebay/what have you, as torrents... but you didn't hear that from me. c:

♟Summer '12 face care routine

I've been using this setup for about 5 months, and I very very rarely have breakouts anymore.  I had medium acne on my forehead but that cleared right up!
It depends on your skin though.  Mine is normal/slightly dry (esp in the heat), so this may be a good setup for general better for mildly-dry skin.  Also I never use foundations, just powder and only maybe twice a year for special things, so I don't have issues with makeup-clogged pores.
( not the best photo, but that's my skin atm - it's pretty even and there's no obvious spotty bits c: )

MORNING
* deep cleans and helps even out your complexion
*removes makeup extremely well
* effective, but leaves your face with a squeaky feeling -
not recommended for drier skin
* easily found at asian markets (esp Japanese/Korean/Chinese markets) -
this lasts EXTREMELY long for one bottle, it only takes a pea-size dab to lather
+
* removes cleanser residue and evens complexion - I rinse it off with water but you can leave it on
* very gentle and supereffective for evening skin tone / pore minimizing
(I don't have to mix it with water because it's mild), softens skin and removes
the squeaky feeling from the Rose cleanser
* you can get this at Target, or order it online

+++

EVENING
* really softening and just moisturizing enough, cleans your face nicely without being harsh
* YMMV warning - I tried this one day just to see what would happen and it worked,
though I thought it might have the opposite effect given that it's a hand soap
* you can find this at the grocery in the organic bath supplies section
 +
* smoothed out my complexion and minimized pores
* wash with cold water after using for best results
* pretty strong (and strong smelling) - I only ever need a very small amount,
and I wet the pad before swiping it on my face
* I bought this on the military base exchange, but I'm sure it's likely at Sephora / other beauty shops

+++

MOISTURIZER

Nivea Smooth Sensation Lotion
* very moisturizing and smoothing
* I think THIS is why my skin has been so good for a while,
it removed all dry spots and made my skin soft and glowy
(on both my body and face, 2X a day morning & night)
* YMMV warning - I use this for a bodylotion, AND as a night cream.
I wouldn't recommend this if you have skin that's at all oily.
* easily available in any grocery store, it's pretty inexpensive at Walmart & such

n o t e s
  • Less is usually more when it comes to using washes and toners on your face.  Too much will make your skin quite unhappy, usually in the direction of too dry.
  • MAKE SURE YOU RINSE EVERYTHING OFF.  Very very few toners are actually gentle enough to leave on, as the majority contain ALCOHOL which is excessively drying in the long run (no wrinkles pls).  You want to reduce the amount of wash residue on your face as much as you can.
  • Changes in season can really mess up your skin, so adjust what you use as you see fit (ex. dry winter = more moisturizing, hot summer = less oily products ).
  • Keep track of what you use so you can remember what works and what doesn't - this is very important in the case of allergies/bad reactions.
  • Personally, any sunblock/sunscreen (especially of the spray variety) wrecks the skin on my face, though the rest of my skin's ok with it.  If you're the same, it's safest to stick with a moisturizer that has SPF in it.  Neutrogena makes a good one for sensitive skin, with 15SPF - it lasts pretty long for the bottle, so it's worth the cost.  I've used this before and it doesn't have such a bad effect, but it still doesn't agree with me so I only use it when I plan on going in the sun for long periods of time.
  • For the ladies: you may like to keep track of your monthly cycle, because most of us get breakouts a few days to a week before IT hits.  Your face produces more oil in response to the hormone changes, hence breakout - you can mostly reduce/counter the effect if you know about the time it'll happen.

♔Umineko no Naku koro Ni : Visual Novel & Anime

If you're interested in purchasing the Japanese game, Witch-Hunt sells it here.
Witch-Hunt also has a full demo version here - includes complete 1st arc ("episode 1"), though I'm not sure if you need to have the game installed already to install the demo.

Umineko no Naku Koro Ni --> mystery/detective/mild horror/gore/suspense/drama

The plot is based on a closed circle/detective mystery premise - the characters ("guests") are all members of the Ushiromiya.  A storm traps them during a reunion at the island of their family home, upon which time odd things begin to happen, and people begin to turn up mysteriously dead.
The murders puzzle and terrify the guests, until a woman named "Beatrice" appears who claims to be a witch - apparently she made a deal with the guests' father, Kinzo, many years ago, for 10 tons of gold to restore his fortune.
Beatrice left a riddle (epitaph, what you will) - the one who solves it receives the gold and becomes the next head of the family.  Until the riddle is solved, people will continue to die in accordance to the riddle itself...if the riddle comes to an end without being solved, Beatrice will fully revive.
However one character, Battler, believes that there's no way magic can be causing the murders, and because of this the riddle cannot be completed.  He seeks to defeat Beatrice in a game of logic, reviewing the events of the island to show that a human was behind all the strange events, and prove that neither witches nor magic exist.

Someone I knew previously told me the anime series was VERY different from the game, because it takes a different track from the original game plot.  I've only ever watched a few episodes into the anime, but from the wiki articles and the info floating around the web, there's major plot differences.

Personally I've never yet played the game (or any visual novel game, tbh) but I hope to once I have time.  Fyi to the visual/artfart sort, the anime is BEAUTIFULLY done; the game's art is...well you can see the art comparison above - the three characters center on the game art are the same three featured in the magazine clip for the anime.
But the storyline's what matters!

Be warned though: there's a lot of time jumping and flashbacks/forwards (in the most LITERAL sense of the word) involved.
Plotwise, Umineko is highly convoluted and will almost definitely give you a headache trying to keep up.  Not to say that the plottwists and reveals aren't well worth that.

The anime's somewhat gory and mildy creepy, but nothing to keep you up at night.  I'm not sure about the game.  Though from the clips I watched on Youtube - the derpy art actually makes it rather creepy for some reason...the characters' expressions especially.

If anyone's played the game and watched the anime, or has a pretty good knowledge/experience of both, leave a comment please - I'd like to hear!

I'll either update this or make a new post as I finish the anime, and later the game. c:

UPDATE 2012-August-19:  I added the link to the manga series - I didn't know there was one, but it looks so far to be like the anime~

UPDATE 2012-August-20:  Stipulation of the game links - as mentioned above, you need to have the original Japanese version of the game installed in order for the patches to work.  You won't be able to play by just having those downloads.  Sorry folksies, I was disappointed too. :c

UPDATE 2012-August-21:  I just watched again from the beginning - I didn't remember anymore so nothing made sense until I started over. :I
The plot is very much the type where you best not blink or look away, but not because you'll necessarily miss a visual detail - you'll just be extremely confused later on if you don't keep track of the lines of both Beatrice's and Battler's arguments.  That being said, poor Battler.  Well, poor everybody really, even poor Beatrice.  You'll probably end up just feeling generally bad for everyone except Bernkastel and Lambdadelta but YMMV.
I still have somewhat iffy feelings about the anime though - after the last ep, I tried to go online and find out if it was like the game.  I found various forum discussions saying NOT SO, and especially of the last ep.  The story's still very intriguing, and personally I'd like to see the real thing.  So I wish to play the game, if I can find a free download for it someplace.  Expect a link up top if I do. c:

P.S. don't miss the epilogue at the end of the last ep.  I quit at the ED credits and then found out and went back to watch it.

EDIT:  Sorry guys, took the links down because of copyright issues.  :c  They're very easily found through Google though, don't worry.

✄ August Freebies!

DID SOMEONE SAY
FREE
...I'm so sorry.

But who doesn't like free stuff though!! :D  Tah dahhhh, August freebies~~~
These are all currently working as of the date I posted this (Aug. 13), & I'll update as they end/run out.
(P.S. None of these are the scammy annoying "fill out another survey/another/another" kind, or scams of any kind, ugh.)

Anything extra required besides personal info (aka shipping, facebook account, etc), I'll indicate next to the link.
These do take a while to be delivered, but personally I've never NOT gotten one when I sent a request in, even though it was a LONG wait.  Just be patient, it was free anyway! c:
Also, they usually ask for your email.  Unless you REALLY want to get product ads from companies in your inbox, it might be a good plan to make a separate email just for these.  I have a separate one I use just for freebies, raffles, mall giveaways, drawings etc., and only use my main one for companies I like a lot (that way I'll definitely see if I receive anything I'd be interested in).

NOTE:  I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing these may be USA & Canada limited.  If anyone outside these territories tries them and it works, I'd be glad to know! C:

+++

L'Occitane - email coupon for a free tube of signature hand cream when you connect your Facebook.  (Really awesome because no purchase required.)
***UPDATE August 14, 2012:  I just got mine today, as well as one for my mom and sister! c:

Nivea - email coupon for a free lip product of your choice via their Facebook page. (I think it's no purchase required.)

True Reflection by Kim Kardashian - free deluxe perfume sample.  ( it's a mini version of the bottle - kinda pretty c: )

Garnier - free Fall Fight shampoo + conditioner sample.

Victoria's Secret - free Beauty Rush lipgloss with any purchase.  Good until September 3, 2012.

PINKNATION (Victoria's Secret) - printable coupon for free Pink panty with Pink purchase, only for NEW Pink Nation members.  Just scroll partly down the page and it's right there.  Coupon's good until September 24, 2012.
***If you put your cellphone number in and say you want texts, you'll get ANOTHER coupon via text message - so that's 2 coupons total. c:  The paper coupon is only good for ONE use.  Some clerks are nice and will let you use the textmessage coupon MULTIPLE times.
They also constantly email you coupons for free gift/gift with purchase, and they'll mail you coupon cards as well.
This is why I have far more panties from VS than I actually pay for, ohoho.

+++

It's really easy to go out there and find free samples for yourself - just go on google and check sites out.  There also may be lots of great makeup/beauty coupons in your Sunday newspaper (incidentally that is, if you GET the newspaper).

It does take a bit of time to hunt them down, but that's the fun of it.  There are also plenty of blogs besides mine where people are nice enough to summarize working freebies.  In a way I guess instead of putting in money, you're putting in time c: so personally I only really ever look for these during summer or school breaks, when things are slow.

I'll do a monthly freebies post, as long as I can find something worth posting that peeps will be interested in. c:

♪ Shampoo&Conditioners + EXTRA haircare tips

Changes of season tend to take a toll on hair - especially in SUMMER, what with sun exposure, going to the beach, and just the HEAT in general.

I put together a review of some things I've tried, as well as some tips to help your hair out.

I figured I'd try some of the Japanese haircare sets, hoping they'd suit my hair better than the stuff I usually got at the grocery c: and for the most part they did.  Your mileage may vary, though, but I hope this helps!

There's three that I've tried out so far:
1.  Shiseido's TSUBAKI Shining (red bottle)
2.  Kracie's Ichikami
3.  Kracie's Umi no Uruoiso ("Ocean's Gift", pretty name!)

++++++++++++++++++

TSUBAKI SHINING
It has camellia oil in it hence "tsubaki", and it makes your hair extremely soft.  On the downside it's oilier than I like, and after a month of using it my hair got weighted down a lot (which I imagine would be worse on finer hair, mine's medium-fine), so I stopped using it.  The plus is that the conditioner is probably optional for most people, since the shampoo's almost a 2-in-1 on its own.
**This is likely best for people with thicker/coarser-texture hair, or for people with dry hair or who use treatments on their hair a lot aka straighteners/curlers/blowdry/dying/bleaching.  The conditioner on its own is REALLY great for split end types!

+++

ICHIKAMI
Extremely softening like Tsubaki, but it's a lot lighter on your hair.  That being said it did make my hair a tiny bit greasy, but nothing to really complain about.  (This is meant to smell of cherry blossoms, but I think it smells more like apples & flowers?  I don't really like apples but it's a very light scent so I don't mind this one.)  Again, for this one I only needed a tiny drop of conditioner compared to the amount of shampoo I used, because the shampoo's pretty moisturizing by itself.  I used this one for a much longer time than Shining.  Not sure if it was just a side-effect from being moisturized, or if the shampoo's MEANT to do this, but I think my hair got slightly darker from using it.  YMMV.
**This is likely best for people with medium thick/slightly coarse hair, or for people with medium dry hair / use treatments on their hair moderately.

UMI NO URUOISO
Currently using this one since July.  Definitely my favorite of the three, it smells floral and a little salty seabreeze-like.  It apparently has 11 kinds of seaweed extract (I'm impressed) and deep-ocean water in it as well.  This one's not weighed down my hair or caused buildup at all, and it still made my hair supersoft.  Unlike the other two, my hair seems fluffier and more volumized by it.  c:  You do need conditioner of some sort with this, probably because of the salt content from the seawater.  The matching conditioner does its job but is still really nice and light.
**This is a good shampoo for people with normal or slightly dry hair.  I wouldn't use this if you tend to have split ends, again because of the salt.
(  the set that I got is here  )

They also make various hair masks and leave-in things for each of these sets - I've never tried them but if I do I'll post a review here. c:

I live quite close to a few Asian supermarkets, and they often have sales on value sets of hair treatments.  If you live near one I'd say check there first and keep tabs on their sales/specials, as ordering online can be more expensive + shipping/handling.  I paid about $20 for the Ichikami and Tsubaki sets, and $15 for the UNU set.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
extra tips c:
  • Using paper towels to pat dry your hair does help it from losing too much moisture.  A more cost effective and planet friendly way: using a microfiber towel.  Using either before blowdrying your hair (or instead of) helps keep your hair from overdrying.
  • Tying your hair up (ponytail, whatever) when it's wet can loosen the roots and make it prone to falling out.  Same goes for excessively towel-scrubbing your hair.  Just pat or lightly squeeze most of the water out, and let it loose until it's dried.
  • For blowdrying, use either cool air or warm air on MEDIUM / LOW speed.  It takes a little longer, but it's not as rough on your strands.
  • For people with longer hair: try putting your hair in a braid (not ponytails) before bed to help keep the hairs from tangling up at night.
  • Body lotion actually works quite well as a leave-in overnight hair mask.  I double up my body lotion (Nivea Smooth Sensation) for this use, I've never tried other kinds of lotion but I imagine they'd all work pretty much the same way.
  • For bangs or flat hair: to regain some volume and fluff after straightening, gather hair as if you're going to make a pouf in the front (or on top of your head, if you're doing all your hair).  Leave it up and blowdry lightly with first WARM (1 minute), then COOL air (1 min) - this sets the roots of your hair.  I found this works best when you've just recently washed your hair.
  • At the beach during summer - if your hair is the type that tends to BLEACH OR COLOR CHANGE WITH SUN EXPOSURE, get ahold of some spray-on sunscreen and give your hair a spritz.  It's really great especially for dyed hair.  Just make sure you shampoo it out really well later, sunscreen's pretty greasy.
  • UPDATE:  Washing your hair with COLD or just-barely-warm water will help prevent hair thinning.  My dad swears by it (he's from the Philippines and he says they didn't use warm water to wash; he's nearly 60 and he hasn't got either white hair or baldspots).  I don't know whether this works myself, but I'm planning to try it out c:

✧ K-ON! Movie! ~ film torrent & OST zip links

I just began watching it now c: already love the intro song (perhaps it's just me, but it sounds a little like the Beatles, and since the club's going to London in the movie it's rather appropriate).

EDIT: OST & film torrent links removed due to copyright. :c  Sorry!

The movie torrent I found is by CoalGuys on Piratebay -- A: 10, V:10, J audio and English subs.

✿ Nail polish + extra tips

Some things I've read or figured out over time, in terms of nail polish. c:
(I haven't worn it much recently because I play guitar, and strumming pretty much means all my polish effort gets wasted.)

+++++++

If you're planning to put color nail polish, put a clear coat on under it.  This will prevent staining.  Another clear layer on top of the color will prevent fading and keep it shiny and chip-free.  It doesn't have to be a top/base coat necessarily, just something to protect your nails.

Light nail polish makes nails look longer, dark nail polish makes them look shorter.  Clear is usually what I use - it goes nicely with everything, looks clean and naturally polished (ahaha.), has no stain worries, and it's nearly impossible to tell when it's chipped etc.

To fast-dry nail polish, put your fingertips in a bowl of ice water for about 10 seconds, then shake off.  Repeat until dry to the touch.  A blowdryer might seem like a good idea but it causes bubbles and streaking.

Don't pick nail polish off.  You'll end up removing the top "skin" layer of your nails as well.  Also don't apply nail polish if your nails themselves are dry/damaged, it'll make it a lot worse.  (Foot cream works a lot better and faster than hand cream, to fix dry nails AND hands.  It's greasier but you only have to use it once or twice to get the same results.)

Don't buy cheap nail polish.  I don't mean price, I mean nail polish made with things that are BAD for your nails aka formaldehydes, formaldehyde resin, toluene, DBP, etc.
Some good kinds that are easily available and affordable: Essie, Revlon, Sally Hansen.  Other kinds I've tried are Sephora, Julep, and Goldie, the bottles are lovely).  My favorite ones I've used are Goldie, Essie, and Julep.  I have a lot of Goldie nailpolishes that I got on sale at Bath and Body Works, but that was a long time ago and I don't know if that brand exists anymore.
(EDIT: From what I could find online, Goldie was a B&BW brand that isn't produced anymore.  If I'm wrong somebody please correct me + source, I'd be glad to know - that stuff's great.)

To prevent streaking, make sure there's enough polish on the brush, then LIGHTLY brush it on in one stroke.  Don't press down too hard, because that causes the streaks/bare spots.

Put nail polish EARLY.  This ensures that it's got enough time to completely dry - I used to put it an hour before going to sleep and figured that would be enough, but nail polish takes MUCH longer to dry 100% so I would wake up with little cloth-crumple impressions.  (I also incidentally broke my habit of sitting on my hands...)

A lot of darker or bold colored polishes will stain nails.  For me, black nail polish doesn't stain, but blues do.  It depends on its chemistry with your fingernails, and it varies a lot from person to person.

Rather than waiting to figure out if it stains/doesn't stain, it's best to prevent it at all.  The best time to remove your nail polish is 3-4 days AFTER you put it on (so not including the first day you had it - therefore 4-5 days total).
An even more unwelcome effect is that your nails may yellow.  This is because, like your skin and the rest of your body, your nails need oxygen - yellowing happens when they're deprived for too long.  My nails tend to yellow/stain quickly, so I remove my polish 3 days after I applied it (total 4 days wearing) just to be safe.

If you do stain or yellow your nails, it can quickly be fixed.  Just put some hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball, and hold it on each fingernail for 5-10 seconds.  (Don't get any on  your clothes, it'll bleach and leave white spots where you probably don't want them.)  This is obviously not the best thing for your nails, so see above for preventing it.  And if it's a REALLY dark stain/yellow, it'll only fade so much - the rest you'll have to just grow out.
AFTER you've bleached your fingernails, however, DO NOT apply nail polish for at least a week (not even clear).  They'll just stain even more quickly, so just wait for them to grow out a little bit before you get back into it.

COOL AND PRACTICALLY-FREE STUFF.  --> http://www.julep.com/
Just take the "style quiz", and it'll give you what color nail polish matches your style (the other options are on the bottom of the results page, in case you don't like the polishes the quiz gives you).  Choose the one you like, then sign up for a subscription.
Enter either COLOR2012 or PENNY in the Discount Code box - this charges you only $0.01 with free shipping for the nail polish set! C:
After your package arrives, you can call and cancel your subscription (which is regularly $20 a month, there's a page that describes what they send you if you choose to continue subscribing).
(A Julep polish is somewhat expensive if you buy it instore, so this isn't half bad for what you get.  ...actually, $0.01 isn't half bad for pretty much anything in general. |D)
NOTE:  This appears to only work in the US as far as I know :c sorry guys!

2012-AUGUST-13 EDIT:  The COLOR2012 and PENNY codes no longer seem to work. :c  The new subscrip deal is on their website.  After you go through the quiz, you can get 3 nail polishes for $9.99, PLUS 2 extra polishes free when you use the code they give you, which isn't bad at all.

☼ Summer diet + exercise tips C: ☼

The thing about college is that (theoretically) you spend most of your time panicking for exams, studying for exams, or doing something class related.  Pretty much 0% of that involves walking/running/jogging/exercise, and it generally involves snacking.  (Not withstanding breaks, during which we students can sit all day on our bottoms at computers by choice, skimming Twitter, Tumblr, or various social networks.)  And when you're tired out...it's hard to get motivated.

Thought I'd post things that I'd heard of before and tried, in an effort to shed some extra pounds.
So far it seems like it's been effective~
I've been doing these things since the start of June and I went from 136lbs to currently 124lbs. c:
(Hopefully I can continue as much of this as I can, once school starts.)

NOTE:  Remember everybody's body is different!  It might take different combinations of methods, or completely different methods, to get something that works for you.  And what works for me might not have any effect at all for other people.  Keep in mind your body type, what kind of diet/foods are available to you. your goal weight, etc etc.

~+~+~+~+~+~
~+~+ W A T E R +~+~
Drinking a lot of water really does help your ENTIRE body.  Not only will you be well hydrated through the summer, but water has no calories and is the healthiest drink for you.  And you can get it pretty much anywhere, and for the most part FREE!  Be sure it's filtered, since tap water can have chemicals in it from when it was cleaned.  I have this bottle (40 oz), which is really nice - leakproof and it keeps the water cold even the next day.  And I drink maybe 4-5 refills a day.  The water rule - at least 8 glasses a day - is just good in general all year.  For weight loss, ice cold water right BEFORE and AFTER eating burns calories, because your body's working to bring that water to body temperature.  I also saw my complexion get a lot nicer just from being better hydrated. so that's a big plus.

~+~+ E X E R C I S E +~+~

You should get in at least 30 minutes per session.  It's tough getting out to do it, especially in the summer heat.  At first it's a little difficult to keep consistent, but the effort's visibly worth it after about 2 weeks.  This will help build nice muscle tone and definition in both your body as you lose weight c:
My routine:
     *run 30 minutes a day, 3X a week
*dance stretches before bed (helps with flexibility and also helps shape your "figure" a little c: )
If you want a less tiring exercise, dancing might be a good option.  It builds flexibility, muscle control, and gracefulness/poise, but best of all it's fun so you hardly feel tired.  Youtube has a lot of nice dance-based workouts, and if you want to get intense there's probably dance studios in your area that offer classes (so YOU CAN SHOW OFF YOUR SWEET MOVES AND BOD AT THE CLUB YOH).

~+~+ D I E T +~+~

"With weightloss, 20% is exercise, but 80% is your diet." <--- my dad.
He's right.  Let me give you an example - 30 minutes of running burns on average 200-300 calories, which is about the contents of a bag of chips! :C
Just cutting back (or cutting out, in my case) snacks like chips and chocolate from your diet can make a HUGE difference.  Personally my weakness is sweets, so I substitute with things like fresh fruits, or yogurt (but I still have my sweet cereal in the morning).
Things like diet shakes and meal shakes CAN help, but it's not the healthiest thing to replace one meal every day with a shake on a longterm basis.  (They've never worked for me, I just feel hungrier after and as a result eat MORE at my next full meal...)  A variety of fresh food is much healthier and way more effective, while using meal shakes only occasionally.
Vegetables with lots of fiber consume calories just through your body trying to digest them - some good ones are jicama and celery.
Eating less meat, especially pork, helps.  My family makes a lot of meat dishes, though, so it's hard to avoid. So in my case I replaced red meat with chicken or fish whenever I could, and chose leaner red meat cuts.  (No bacon or sausages though, crey.)
And avoid fast food & canned/processed foods as much as possible!

~+~+ other  tips +~+~
  • If you shower/bathe during the day, use cooler water.  If you shower/bathe in the evening, use warmer water and try to squeeze your bath in before 9PM.  Doing either of these can help steady your metabolism and slim you down, as well as being relaxing and refreshing.
  • Coconut water is a good replacement for water, it's extremely hydrating and mild-tasting.  They're easy to find in drink cans at Asian markets, and they're becoming common in health-food aisles.
  • Sleep at LEAST 8 hours a night, 10 if you can manage it.  This does wonderful things for your wellness in general, because you're giving your brain plenty of time to repair your body.  And it helps with complexion problems and dark undereyes.
  • Cheese is a really fatty food, but also very full of protein and calcium.  I LOVE cheese, so one that I like is Feta - it's low in fat and still has lots of good things.  (Warning though, it's pretty tart-tasting.)
  • Cut down on salt and salty foods - too much salt in your system holds extra water and makes you feel and look bloaty.  Cutting back's also better for your heart and blood vessels.
  • When you go out to eat, eat smart!  A lot of restaurants now offer fresh/healthy menu items, and most places have a calorie chart available.
  • Another alternative to plain water is tea, either unsweetened or with a little honey.  Tea has tons of antioxidants and good stuff in it, that strengthen your skin against sun damage among other benefits.
  • UPDATE:  Don't eat after 9PM - your body considers the time after that as the "next day" in terms of metabolism function.  Drinking's always fine though. c:
  • UPDATE:  Sleeping by 10PM and at least before 11PM at night helps regulate your metabolism as well (and getting to bed earlier -> more sleep -> better for you overall).  ...Though this is realistically difficult to do during the school year - I try really hard to get stuff done as fast as possible, and sleep at 12 midnight.
  • UPDATE:  Avoid too much caffeine, and don't drink soda.  High levels of caffeine makes you bloated (tea is relatively low in caffeine, so it still gives you a little bit of an energy perk), and soda is UNBELIEVABLY full of sugar.  A can of Coke is about 3 tbsp., which sounds small until you try measuring it out.  Another thing with soda: when you eat food, a thin layer of fat accumulates on your tongue and eventually it causes your body to send the "full" signal to your brain.  Soda actually takes some of that layer off, so you'll end up eating more than you should if you drink soda with your meal.
  • UPDATE:  Most people who get up by 7AM (as in fully awake and out of bed) are significantly slimmer.  A side benefit is it's also shown to give a big mood boost - it's a little contradictory to think that getting up so early makes you happier, but it's true! C:
I'll update this if I find anything else helpful!

IMPORTANT NOTE:  This is partly a weightloss post and partly a health post.
It's best to be fully aware of your IDEAL body weight (taking into account lifestyle, height, etc.) as this GREATLY varies between people.  And there are people who naturally just tend toward a particular weight - this doesn't necessarily mean anything's up, it may just be how your body naturally is, and there's nothing wrong or worrying about that!
For you guys who, like me, wanted to slim down: being healthy about what you eat and do is most important, and if you keep it up then slimming down naturally comes along AND lasts for the long term.
Patience, persistence, and self control are key! C:

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE:  I am absolutely not, not, NOT encouraging habits leading to or supporting eating disorders or the development of such.  They're dangerous and destructive, and very often rebound in the worst ways both physically and mentally.  They're also increasingly common, due to images in the media (which more and more recently seem to be taking a turn for the better, thankfully).
If you feel that you may be suffering from an eating disorder, PLEASE seek help - don't let it hurt your body or yourself.  If you need somebody to talk to, leave a comment asking for my email - I'm always open and ready to listen, and I'll do whatever is in my power to help you if you want it.
With time, thought, and support, you CAN get through it and learn to love yourself as you are.

๑ PMMM: Contract Maybe? (Isa & Gabs Remix WIP) ๑

I saw a post on Tumblr a few weeks back, about how Carly Rae Jepsen's song was basically her singing about being a Puella Magi.  (If you know the post PLEASE comment with the link, I want to link back because I would've never seen it otherwise. xD)

Mentioned it to Gabs, who watched the show a while back with urging.
We put this together c:  meant to sound like each Puella Magi gets her own line, tried to make the bits related to their stories somehow.
How'd we do so far?

NOTE: It's not done, the ending's left off.  And I know, stuff sounds crappy in there, & some of the lyrics are basically unchanged.  (after a 2nd look I don't like Homura's so much...)
Workin' on it yoh.

( I ought to find something else to post about besides PMMM hm? (= u =  );...   )

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++=

[HOMURA]
I threw a wish in the well
Madoka, I'll never tell
I turned back time, you still fell
I'll try another way...

[MADOKA]
I'll trade my soul for this wish
To give my life just for this:
The ones I love left in bliss
And I will fade away

[PUELLA MAGI]
Your stare was holdin'
Bright red eyes were glowin'
Cold night, wind was blowin'
"Where you think you're goin' cutie?"

[KYUUBEY]
Hey I just met you!
And this sounds crazy,
But I grant wishes!
So contract, maybe?

You might despair and
Cry like a baby,
But you'll kill witches!
So contract, maybe?

Hey I just met you!
And this sounds crazy,
But I grant wishes!
So contract, maybe?

And Homu-Homugirl
Tried to chase me,
Madoka saved me!
So contract maybe?

[SAYAKA]
His music held me in thrall
I took no time with the fall
He gave me nothing at all
Despair took me away

[KYOUKO]
I beg and borrow and steal,
She was my friend, it was real
I didn't know I would feel it
Til' she went away

[PUELLA MAGI]
Your stare was holdin'
Cute face, no emotion
Cold night, wind was blowin'
"Where you think you're going Kyubey?

[KYUUBEY]
Hey I just met you!
And this sounds crazy,
But I grant wishes!
So contract, maybe?

You might despair and
Cry like a baby,
But you'll save people!
So contract, maybe?

Hey I just met you!
And this sounds crazy,
But I grant wishes!
So contract, maybe?

And Homu-Homugirl
Tried to chase me,
Madoka saved me!
So contract maybe?

[MAMI]
Before you came into my life
I was alone and
I missed you so bad
I missed you so, so bad

Before you came into my life,
I was alone and
Please you should know that
I miss you so, so bad

[KYUUBEY]
We're incubators,
Here to get energy
When you kill witches,
So contract maybe?

❀ PMMM Kyuubey Bag! ❀

It caaaaaaaaaaaaaaame QuQ

It's so cute aaah.  It's perfectly sized for over the shoulder, and it's not bulky.  The inside's plastic-lined, and has a small zip for phone/ipod/little things.  The whole thing zips closed at the top, so your things won't fall out.

I'm pretty sure the full Japanese text says "Make a contract and become a magical girl!"  I can read the 2nd half that says "become a magical girl!" so I assume it's following Kyuubey's catchphrase.

Dimensions: 12"long X 12"wide X 2-3"deep, approx.

I got it on eBay from eknight-anime (just ordered a 2nd one for my sister) -- the seller hasn't got any left but she/he'll probably restock or custom order if you want one. c:
(They're also on a couple of other sites I saw on google search, but I've never ordered from those so I don't know how trusty they are.)

EDIT 2012 July 20:  Gabs' bag arrived today c: now we have matching ones (except she's got Homura's Soul Gem and I've Madoka's pink one.)
